Traditional Rug Hooking for Beginners

Create a charming landscape using yarn and wool fabric strips. Register by date: November 7th, 2026

Class/Workshop Description

Create a charming landscape using yarn and wool fabric strips with traditional rug hooking techniques. This beginner-friendly class guides students through material choices, with an emphasis on colour, design, and textural possibilities. Students will explore the use of handspun and hand-dyed fibres, as well as commercial and recycled yarns. Students will complete a small 6” square sample to the finishing stage during the workshop while learning foundational skills they can confidently apply to larger, more detailed hooked projects in the future. Methods for finishing edges will be discussed so students can complete their rug at home. Student supply kit is included in the cost of the workshop and provides everything required to complete this rug; hand-drawn pattern on backing linen stapled to a 10" frame, basic rug hook, and a combination of yarn weights and hand-dyed wool fabric strips, cut in various widths. Students should bring a small-sized Ziploc bag. Optional: personal small scissors or snips. Bag lunch.
